What We Do

What Is Post-Processing for 3D Printing?

Post-processing refers to all finishing steps performed after a part leaves the printer, removing supports, sanding surfaces, applying coatings, or adding functional treatments like threading and heat treatment.

As additive manufacturing moves from prototyping into full-scale production, surface quality and dimensional accuracy matter more than ever. A raw 3D-printed part is rarely end-use ready; post-processing bridges that gap.

At 3D Specialist, we take every component through a meticulous finishing workflow tailored to your material, application, and aesthetic requirements, delivering parts that look, feel, and perform to the highest standards.

Our Capabilities

Post-Processing Methods

Eight specialist finishing processes, each selected and applied to your parts by our experienced technicians.

01

Threading

Precision thread creation on printed parts, internal (female) and external (male), enabling reliable mechanical assembly in end-use products.

  • Metric, UN, and BSP standards
  • Tap and die, thread milling
  • Applied to metals, plastics & composites

02

Polishing

Achieve mirror-like or satin finishes using mechanical, chemical, or manual polishing techniques adapted to each material type.

  • Mechanical, chemical & manual methods
  • Corrosion & wear resistance improvement
  • Metals, plastics, glass & ceramics

03

Sandblasting

Propelling precision abrasives at high velocity to clean, texture, or prepare surfaces, removing rust, old coatings, and contaminants efficiently.

  • Sand, glass beads, aluminium oxide
  • Surface prep for coatings & paint
  • Automotive, industrial & decorative

04

Plating

Depositing a thin layer of metal onto your component's surface to improve appearance, resistance to corrosion, and functional performance.

  • Electroplating: gold, silver, nickel, chrome
  • Electroless & PVD plating options
  • Decorative and industrial applications

05

Coloring

Applying consistent, durable color to parts through painting, anodizing, or powder coating, supporting both branding and functional requirements.

  • Spray painting & powder coating
  • Anodizing with full color range
  • UV-resistant & custom RAL colors

06

Heat Treatment

Controlled heating and cooling cycles to modify the mechanical and chemical properties of metals, improving strength, hardness, and durability.

  • Annealing, quenching & tempering
  • Normalizing & case hardening
  • Aerospace, automotive & industrial

07

Laser Etching

High-precision permanent marking and engraving using focused laser technology, ideal for serial numbers, logos, barcodes, and custom designs.

  • Metals, plastics, glass, wood & leather
  • Serial numbers, barcodes & logos
  • Non-contact, no material distortion

08

Anodizing

An electrochemical process that thickens the natural oxide layer on aluminium and other metals, significantly improving corrosion resistance, hardness, and surface quality.

  • Sulfuric & hard-coat anodizing
  • Full spectrum dye color options
  • Environmentally friendly process

We accept STL, STEP, STP, OBJ, 3MF, IGS, IGES, DXF, DWG, AMF, PDF, JPG, PNG, and more. For complex assemblies, send us your native CAD files and we'll review them directly.

Standard finishing (sanding, polishing, painting) typically takes 1–3 business days. Multi-step processes like anodizing, plating, or heat treatment may require 3–7 days depending on complexity and batch size. Rush orders can be arranged, contact us to discuss.

Absolutely. Many production parts require a sequence of treatments, for example, sandblasting before anodizing, or threading after heat treatment. Our engineers will plan the optimal sequence for your part and material.

We work with a wide range of materials including aluminium, steel, stainless steel, titanium, engineering plastics (PLA, ABS, PETG, Nylon), resins, and composites. Material suitability varies by process, our team will confirm compatibility when reviewing your quote.

Yes. Our post-processing services are available for parts produced elsewhere, whether 3D-printed, CNC-machined, or cast. Simply send us your parts along with your finishing requirements and we'll provide a quote.
